Why New Jersey?

Articles taking place in Jersey City and in the surrounding neighborhood.

Some guy makes fun of Newark. The neighborhood outside of the prudential center isn't really that bad compared to other areas of Newark so he was wrong to say it.

Webloging Ethics

Weblogs or "Blogs", are the mavericks of the online world. Two of their greatest strengths are their ability to filter and disseminate information to a widely dispersed audience, and their position outside the mainstream of mass media. Beholden to no one, weblogs point to, comment on, and spread information according to their own, quirky criteria.

The weblog network's potential influence may be the real reason mainstream news organizations have begun investigating the phenomenon, and it probably underlies much of the talk about weblogs as journalism. Webloggers may not think in terms of control and influence, but commercial media do. Mass media seeks, above all, to gain a wide audience. Advertising revenues, the lifeblood of any professional publication or broadcast, depend on the size of that publication's audience. Content, from a business standpoint, is there only to deliver eyeballs to advertisers, whether the medium is paper or television.

Journalists — the people who actually report the news — are acutely aware of the potential for abuse that is inherent in their system, which relies on support from businesses and power brokers, each with an agenda to promote. Their ethical standards are designed to delineate the journalist's responsibilities and provide a clear code of conduct that will ensure the integrity of the news.

Weblogs, produced by nonprofessionals, have no such code, and individual webloggers seem almost proud of their amateur status. "We don't need no stinkin' fact checkers" seems to be the prevailing attitude, as if inaccuracy were a virtue.

Let me propose a radical notion: The weblog's greatest strength — its uncensored, unmediated, uncontrolled voice — is also its greatest weakness. News outlets may be ultimately beholden to advertising interests, and reporters may have a strong incentive for remaining on good terms with their sources in order to remain in the loop; but because they are businesses with salaries to pay, advertisers to please, and audiences to attract and hold, professional news organizations have a vested interest in upholding certain standards so that readers keep subscribing and advertisers keep buying. Weblogs, with only minor costs and little hope of significant financial gain, have no such incentives.

The very things that may compromise professional news outlets are at the same time incentives for some level of journalistic standards. And the very things that make weblogs so valuable as alternative news sources — the lack of gatekeepers and the freedom from all consequences — may compromise their integrity and thus their value. There is every indication that weblogs will gain even greater influence as their numbers grow and awareness of the form becomes more widespread. It is not true, as some people assert, that the network will route around misinformation, or that the truth is always filtered to widespread awareness. Rumors spread because they are fun to pass along. Corrections rarely gain much traction either in the real world or online; they just aren't as much fun.

There has been almost no talk about ethics in the weblog universe: Mavericks are notoriously resistant to being told what to do.

In conclusion, here's a silly video made by Tim and Eric:

The Primitve Side

The root to really understanding who you are is to understand your primitive self. The instinctive natural side that can help you realize who you truly are. The false self you use in society and during the work day is keeping you from knowing yourself. There is only one person and that is the guy who wants to get laid, make his friends laugh, and talk about how big his shits are. Finding the primitive can make you very wise.

I'm all for understanding yourself but I can agree with denying impulses that are harmful to others. It's difficult to find balance because none of us are balanced. If you don't know who you are, you're close to insanity, angry, or desctructive.

When I start working on a project I have a few ideas and theories I'd like to be underlying message of the piece and put them together. Then during it's creation I find more ideas or places to go and sometimes flip my original ideas and theories on their heads. When I originally wrote Rainbow, I was making this absurd character that slightly represented immigration problems in the US then about half way through production I realized he can represent so much more about the United States and the powerful ignorance that exists inside this country. The great thing about working with a script and a laid out plan is that I can say "fuck it" and do whatever I want. The more I go places within the scripted world that weren't seen originally, the better the final piece tends to come out. Full improvisation through out the production really makes the projects great.

Why everybody should curse.

Peter Cook is an old name. I was just watching some clips and thought this was hilarious.

Absurd anti-establishment humor is awesome and is hard to get on television. Thanks for posting, Andy.

awkward chinese buffet outing

I went to a chinese buffet tonight in Albany. My friend Mike and I decided to go against better judgment...The food was terrible and obviously sitting out for hours, maybe even all day. But this was not the best part of the journey. We sat down and as we ate our subpar meal I heard that Whitney Houston song from the Bodyguard playing in the background...A slow guitar version of it anyway. Mike did not realize but I kept laughing while I was eating and he finally asked...And I told him what it was and it took him a few seconds to realize. The following act was Titanic. Then the closing song was Anything I do...I do it for you, by Bryan Adams. This one really tied the meal up nicely. The entire time we just sat and tried our best not to pay attention, but it was kind of hard, because we were the only people in the place and it was just such datey music. When I started to sing the lyrics to the Bryan Adams one I found a piece of hair in my ice cream...and then we pretty much left. I think the overwhelming awkwardness of it though just made my night complete.

New people who will be posting

I'm adding new people to the blog who are associated with the Upset Triangle. Who knows, they might one day become members. They have to show themselves. Haha! I don't fully support what they say but I also do. If that makes sense, good.

Me writie wordies

Commercial attitude and comedy do not always agree with each other. To make great comedy you have to steer away from something considered "normal" a good amount of the time. That's why a baby with a vagina for a head is hilarious. I'm going to create a few more tv pilot ideas and implement them. Right now we're working on the second episode of Redeeming Rainbow which is now going to be entitled "The Upset Triangle Presents". We're moving the focus off of rainbow. Placing the focus towards the world of the upset triangle and it's main character's Dan and Pat. Future plans for the Upset Triangle thus far:

-Episode 2: "The Upset Triangle Presents: The Wizard's Curse?"
We've shot a little less than half of the script but what we have so far is great and I've hurt myself laughing. Pat cried laughing but that was over the old story of alex zuhowskie jumping out of the second floor of the middle school and running home. The style of this episode is moving away from the mockumentary format I've been comfortable working in. Now that the characters are established I believe this episode will kill people with it's LSD enlaced comedy.

-The Upset Triangle's Last Sketch Show
It's been on the table for a while. It's time to get it done and over with. So far it's been written out but who knows. It's a crazy sketch show that makes fun of sketch comedy. The premise is that it's our last sketch show and we decided to perform it in NYC because all our past performances have been in Jersey City at "Rascals: Jersey City", which closed down. We've gotten so huge in Jersey City that we decided to bring our show to the big apple. The Mayor is very upset.

-The Calderons Webisodes
I've teamed up with Joe Narcisco(split the difference, www.joenarcisco.com) to start working on a new pilot for the calderons with a different set up. If the plan works out, it could be an unbelievable amazing project.

-Episode 3: "The Upset Triangle Presents: Back in Time"
This episode has been outlined. It's going to be fantastic if we decide to make it.

-The Upset Triangle Movie
This has been in the works for about two years, a lot of the ideas for the movie influenced the creation of Redeeming Rainbow. If it were made it'd have to be hilarious.

-The Long Walk
A documentary about a walk,a project me and Pat could spearhead into creation.

-Gas Mask
A narrative about a suburban dad who decides to put a gas mask on and never take it off. Could be good for PITtv.

-Werewolves of Thunder
A mockumentary about a middle aged loser biker gang from the suburbs who try to raise enough money for a children's hospital.

-The Library project.
I've been thinking about this on and off for a while, not sure.

Too many ideas, so little time. The Upset Triangle is huge and powerful so it can all be done.
